Information for Travelers to Algeria


Limited quantities of tobacco, alcohol, perfumes and gifts may be brought in duty free. On arrival in Algeria, foreign currency must be declared to the customs authorities. It is prohibited to bring weapons, drugs, obscene literature and films as well as Algerian currency.

Personal belongings

Travelers arriving in Algeria are allowed to import duty and tax free for all personal belongings, except for goods imported for commercial purposes.

Custom free import

  • 0.15 liter of perfume in opened bottles or ½ liter of Eau de cologne in opened bottles.
  • 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 400 grams of tobacco.
  • 01 liter of alcoholic beverages per person.
  • Eau de toilette: 500 ml


Currency Import regulations:

Foreign currencies: unlimited, to be changed at the nearest bank. The traveler can import, without limits, bank notes and other means of payment. However, it remains the traveler’s duty to declare by writing (on a form) the notes, the means of payment, gold, platinum or silver jewelry. Some hotels and business do accept payments by credit card.

Currency Export regulations:

Foreign currencies: up to the amount imported and declared. It is necessary to submit the currency declaration issued on arrival. Declaration of exchange to be presented upon departure.


Cats and dogs must be accompanied by a veterinarian rabies inoculation certificate, issued at point of origin.

Psittacine birds: health certificate, certificate of origin and statement of veterinary surgeon that bird is free from psittacosis.

Provided they belong to the traveler, the following products are admitted on temporary exemption: clothes, sport devices and machines, a tent and camping objects, a pleasure boat of less than 5.5 meter and without engine, 2 cameras, a musical instrument, a radio and a bicycle.


Besides the products imported custom free, the traveler can import non commercial products, for personal or family use or for the exercise of a professional activity, having nothing to do with commercialization. These products are subject to a fixed taxation. This procedure excludes cars, tobacco and alcohol, jewelry, precious metals and ammunition.


Vehicles, caravans, planes and boats are admitted on temporary exemption. To this effect, a touristic card with three (03) month validity is delivered on arrival by the Algerian customs office. The traveler must subscribe to obligatory frontier insurance. In this regard, the international insurance card is not accepted.


At the time of entry to Algeria, the traveler has to declare imported goods and discharge the obligatory fees and taxes. This declaration can be verbal or written (when the goods relate to commerce).
